Hear from our Team

Hayden
Hayden is a Data Scientist at 2OS. He holds a BS in Economics from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and an MS in Economics and Computation from Duke University. Hayden completed the Business Analyst internship at 2OS before returning full-time as a Data Scientist following graduation.

Yuhan
Yuhan is a Data Scientist at 2OS. She received a BA in Applied Statistics and Psychology from the University of Virginia, followed by a Master’s in Statistical Science from Duke University. Yuhan completed the Data Science internship at 2OS before returning full-time following graduation.
In what ways did the work you did during your internship feel meaningful or impactful?
During my internship, I got to work on two projects with real clients. I was treated as an equal team member by my coworkers from the start and had the opportunity to make substantial contributions to both projects. It was especially rewarding to see one of the clients I worked with make immediate changes to their underwriting practices in response to the recommendations of my team. While internship experiences will vary depending on staffing levels, 2OS has demonstrated a commitment to providing high-quality experience to interns. -Hayden
What did you learn over the course of the internship?
During my internship, I improved my skills in data analysis and data visualization, but the most important skill I developed was knowing when to ask for help. Nobody learns about credit risk in school, so every intern or entry-level hire comes into 2OS needing to learn a lot. While several days are dedicated to training, they won’t cover all of the finer points that come up in a project. I never felt like I was being a burden when I frequently asked more senior team members for help. Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to contribute to projects so soon after joining. -Hayden
What was it like living and working in Richmond for the summer?
I found that there were plenty of fun things to do, including concerts, interesting restaurants, and museums/historical sites. I also really enjoy hiking, and Shenandoah National Park is just two hours away, perfect for weekend trips. If you receive an offer, I highly encourage you to attend Sell Weekend, where you will get a chance to meet your future coworkers and see some of what Richmond has to offer! -Hayden
What would you tell a student who is considering applying to 2OS?
What stands out most to me is that former 2OS interns have an excellent sense of what it’s like to work here after spending 10 weeks collaborating on projects, attending company events, visiting the Arlington office, and more. Remarkably, they overwhelmingly choose to return full-time. To me, that is the strongest concrete evidence that 2OS is a great place to start your career. It reflects both the positive impression left by the internship experience and the many opportunities interns are given to develop and demonstrate their skills. -Hayden
What drew you to intern at 2nd Order Solutions?
While I was interning, I found that as a new graduate, I was drawn to 2OS for the opportunity to build a strong foundation in consulting and financial products through both learning and practical application. I wanted an experience that combined structured training with meaningful, hands-on work and that’s exactly what I found. From onboarding and training sessions to working directly on real projects, the internship allowed me to develop technical and professional skills while gaining exposure to different aspects of the industry. Outside of the office, 2OS is also dedicated to creating a positive intern experience through opportunities to explore Richmond with other interns and full-time associates, a trip to the Arlington, VA office, and a company offsite at a luxury hotel in VA. Overall it offered a great balance of professional development and community. -Yuhan
What did you enjoy most about the culture at 2OS?
The people were what I enjoyed most about working at 2OS. As a boutique consulting firm, 2OS is dedicated to creating a healthy and growth-oriented environment for its employees. The Lunch and Learn sessions were one of my favorite parts of the internship because they gave me the opportunity to hear from employees across different teams and learn about their career paths, project experiences, and areas of expertise. I also appreciated how much the company invests in its people, whether through professional development opportunities like conference sponsorships for full-time associates or by creating spaces for employees to continuously learn from one another.
As an international student, it has been especially meaningful to see the support that 2OS provides throughout every stage of the immigration process. From STEM OPT and H-1B sponsorship to green card support, the company demonstrates a genuine commitment to helping employees build long-term careers here. Knowing that this support exists gave me confidence that 2OS truly values the people it brings on board. -Yuhan
What surprised you most about the internship experience?
What surprised me most was how involved interns are in the day-to-day work. Interns are given many of the same opportunities as full-time employees, including participating in client-facing projects, contributing to discussions, and collaborating across teams. This gave me a much better understanding of how projects typically operate in consulting and financial services. I was also surprised by the amount of exposure interns receive across different parts of the business, including the opportunity to sit in on client meetings and see firsthand how those relationships are built and maintained. -Yuhan
